Designated Area Migration Agreements (DAMAs) are a practical tool for regional employers who cannot fill positions through the standard skilled migration program.
What a DAMA does
A DAMA is a formal agreement between the Australian government and a regional authority. It allows employers in that region to sponsor workers with concessions: access to occupations not on standard lists, lower English requirements, lower salary thresholds, older age limits, and simplified skill assessments.
Which regions in Queensland have a DAMA?
Coverage changes over time. At the time of writing, areas include parts of Far North Queensland (including Cairns), North Queensland and other regional areas. Contact us for current information.
How it works for employers
Check your business is in a DAMA area. Check the occupation is covered. Demonstrate genuine local recruitment efforts. Apply for endorsement from the Designated Area Representative. Apply for the labour agreement. Nominate the worker and sponsor their visa.
How it works for workers
You are nominated by an employer with a DAMA labour agreement. You apply for a 482 under the labour agreement stream. Depending on DAMA terms, you may later be eligible for permanent residence through the 186 or the regional pathway (491/191).
Industries that use DAMA in Queensland
Hospitality (cooks, chefs, cafe managers), meat processing, aged care and disability support, agriculture, construction trades and healthcare. These are the industries with persistent regional shortages.
