The medical treatment visa (subclass 602) is for people who need to come to Australia (or stay in Australia) to receive medical treatment that is not available in their home country.
What the visa covers
The visa has streams for the patient, a person accompanying and assisting the patient (medical escort), and an organ or tissue donor.
Requirements
You need a letter from a treating medical practitioner in Australia confirming the treatment is necessary and available. You need evidence that you can pay for the treatment and your living costs while in Australia. There is generally no access to Medicare. You also need to show you intend to leave Australia when the treatment is complete.
Your current visa is expiring and treatment is not finished
If you are already in Australia and your current visa is expiring before your treatment is complete, you need to act before the visa expires. Becoming unlawful in Australia creates additional problems. Contact us to discuss your options for extending your stay.
